I was a few years too young to see the first Back to the Future in the theaters, but can still remember riding home from the second installment: my brother and I were flipping imaginary switches and performing sound effects the entire way home, somehow convinced that a Honda Civic hatchback could double for Doc Brown's DeLorean. We dreamt of building our own Flux Capacitors and someday adding superfluous tubing to the exteriors of the cars we hoped to own. I had a lunchbox (with thermos), but the merchandising for this franchise fell well short of the hopes and expectations of an entire generation of fans. My son (5 y.o.) is a Back to the Future NUT. He hums the theme song to himself, practices sketching schematics of the Flux Capacitor, and plays out each role as he watches the movies for the fiftieth time (except for Doc; I do a wicked Christopher Lloyd). While my childhood was lacking in sufficient outlets for such fanaticism, thankfully someone FINALLY decided that a proper toy DeLorean find its way into the world, and my son can get his Christmas wish, which is for "a time machine" OR (if that's unavailable) "a Flux Capacitor, DeLorean car, and enough 'plutomium'"to generate the "1.21 jigowatts for the time curcuits." I get a kick out of it every time he says it, and now thanks to Diamond Select Toys and Entertainment Earth I can give him the go-ahead to ask Santa for what he really wants. Hopefully he won't be disappointed that it's just a toy! PROS: * The sounds are varied enough to keep the feature interesting. * The head and taillights are a little ordinary, but the glowing blue time travel mode is AWESOME!!! * The details (number of items, quality of depiction, coloration, etc.) on the outside of the car are far better than I had expected. * The product in general is somewhat larger than I had imagined, and combined with the other features makes it well worth the price considering comparable toys at the store. * It's the freakin' DeLorean from Back to the Future!!! CONS * The doors are cool, though they seem a bit flimsy, and could lock into place a little better. * Lowering the tires is a little difficult, as each wheel has its own "attitude" toward the function; it's still a cool feature integral to the BTTF II edition. * The Flux Capacitor is somewhat hidden, and can only be seen clearly when looking directly into the windshield. All told, despite the tires, I'm extremely satisfied with this item and am very much looking forward to providing such an undeniably cool toy to my son for his surprisingly good behavior this year. Anyone who is a fan of Back to the Future (and possesses the required level of geekitude) should be more than happy with this item and its counterparts from the rest of the trilogy.
