The Lockheed P-2 Neptune was originally designed in 1945 as a Maritime Patrol, replacing the PV-1 Ventura and PV-2 Harpoon. A few aircraft were converted for carrier use and successfully launched. The Neptune was successful in export and many countries used the aircraft even after the successor, the Lockheed P-3 Orion, was produced to replace it. The Japan Maritime Self Defense Force received a license to build a version of the P-2, designated the P2V-7. The Kawasaki-built aircraft was essentially a turboprop-powered version of the radial engineed P-2 Neptune.
