The B-17 was the first mass-produced, four-engine heavy bomber. The term “Flying Fortress” was coined by a reporter from the Seattle Times when a B-17 rolled out replete with its phalanx of machine gun installations. This B-17F-25 model is christened “The Duchess”, as flown by the 358th Bomb Squadron of the USAF in 1944.
